Frequently Asked Questions

We hope the following will be helpful. If you have any more questions please contact us via email or phone.

At what time of the year should I apply?

The course is very popular so the earlier you apply the better. Most applications are received in the Autumn and early Spring term.

When does the course run?

From September to July each year.

How do I apply for a place on the course?

Through the GTTR, either on line via their website or by phoning 0871 468 0469.

What are the qualifications for entry onto the course?

An honours degree with a classification of 2.2 or above.
O level / GCSE English Language and Mathematics A-C grades and also O Level / GCSE Science at A-C grade.
These qualifications have to be gained and confirmed before entry.

What do I do if my degree is not a British degree?

Contact NARIC on 0870 9904088 and gain paper verification that it is equivalent to a British Honours degree of 2:2 or above.

Do I need to have certain checks made?

Yes. Medical and Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) checks are essential. You will also need to produce original certificates to verify your academic qualifications.

Would you expect applicants to have experience in an English primary school before starting the course?

Yes. It is essential to gain experience of the English National Curriculum and current primary practice. You will need to acquire experience as a volunteer helper or classroom assistant in an English primary school before starting the course.  If you are able to arrange this before interview, it will strengthen your hand.

Although a minimum of two weeks is required, the more you can do the better and the easier you will find the course. Your time in school also allows you to confirm that you do want to train to teach.

Can I use my experience in a Northern Irish school as my school experience requirement?

Not on its own.  Whilst your experience will be valued, you will be placed and assessed in English schools and will need to become familiar with them by arranging time in at least one maintained primary school in England.

I only have experience in an Irish school.  Do I need experience in English primary schools before the interview?

No, but if you have had experience, there is a greater likelihood of being able to answer the questions with conviction and therefore gaining a place on the course.

Who should I ask to be my referees on my application form?

We would advise you to have one referee who can verify your academic ability and another who can comment on your ability to work with children.  This is often a teacher/headteacher.

Do I need to be a Catholic to apply for the course?

No.  The development of high quality teachers is at the heart of our mission.  As long as you have the potential to become a good teacher and you share or empathise with faith schools, you should enjoy the programme.

Do you get a PGCE upon successful completion of the course?

Successful trainees receive an integrated award of QTS and a PGCE (M) or PGCE (H).  Both provide excellent preparation for teaching in schools.

Does the training have to take place in a SCITT Partnership school?

Yes. Our schools are chosen with great care and staff in them are specifically trained to support you.

Are my tuition fees paid?

Under the legislation for variable tuition fees, you are liable to cover the cost of part of the tuition fee yourself, although you may apply for a loan or grant via your LA or the Student Loans Company. Please visit www.direct.gov.uk/studentfinance for more information.

Can I apply for a student loan?
