Schools involved with the Primary Catholic Partnership SCITT

During your year you would have two main school placements and the opportunity to visit a third school.  We aim to give as broad an experience as possible for example one small and one large school or a rural and an urban school.

Isle of Wight Schools

Archbishop King Middle School – Newport

It caters for children from the age of  9 to 13  (years 5 – 8), with a standard entry number of 90, who are arranged into 3 parallel classes.  It is a happy school with a caring ethos. In trying to enable all its pupils to reach their full potential, the school strives to offer an appropriate and challenging curriculum within a caring environment based on trust and respect. The staff place great emphasis on having a positive atmosphere where both academic progress and the education of the whole child is important with an increasing range of extra-curricular activities being offered. Opportunities are provided to recognise and celebrate the God-given gifts of each person and the life of the school is rooted in the life and values of the Catholic Church. Archbishop King School has some excellent facilities which include an extensive library, ICT suite, science laboratory, playing fields and sport facilities to name but a few.  We have just received confirmation of a major funding project hopefully to be completed during this school year (including an ICT suite).

St Saviour’s – Totland Bay

St. Saviour’s is a small school found on the West of the Isle of Wight not far from “The Needles”.  It has approximately 140 children on roll from the age of 4 to 9 years.

It has recently had as extensive building programme which has provided the school with a number of new facilities.

The church is very close to the school and is well used by them for a variety of purposes.

St Mary’s – Ryde

St. Mary’s is situated on the east side of Ryde and has been in its present buildings since 1977.  The school is arranged in five classes with one year group in each class which range in size from 25 to 30.  Children are aged from 4 to 9 years and children transfer to Archbishop King Catholic Middle School in Newport or one of five local middle schools at the end of year 4.

The school is set in its own extensive grounds with a field, playground and some climbing apparatus.

A variety of modifications to the buildings have been on-going over the last five years in order to make the best possible use of the space and to upgrade security.

Holy Cross – East Cowes

Holy Cross is one of five catholic primary or first schools on the Isle of Wight.

The school is beautifully situated within the grounds of the Convent of the Cross on the northern tip of the Island.  The school enjoys spectacular views of Cowes and across the Solent.

At present we have 87 pupils on roll aged 4 to 9.  The children are taught in four small classes.  Pupils enjoy the use of a large playing field and an enclosed hard court area for games and play.  There is also an adventure playground and plans to build a large garden and quiet area.

St Wilfrid’s – Ventnor

St Wilfrid’s is a small (113 on role), successful, Catholic First School serving the parishes of Ventnor, Shanklin and Sandown.  The school has a long, interesting history dating back to 1896.  Today we are a well-established and thriving school carrying on the caring role, which has long been a recognised feature of our school.  A number of our families have attended the school for several generations and it has a history of being a small welcoming school that promotes strong Christian values and offers a high quality of education that looks to meet the needs of each individual pupil.  This is identified very specifically within our school aims through which we enable people to grow by recognising each person as an individual who is uniquely created by God.  We try to achieve this through valuing and respecting everyone, and by creating an atmosphere of love and trust within and throughout our community.

Having the Early Years Unit on site since 1997 has strengthened our links with the local community.  The Unit offers an excellent start for pre-school children and this has been stated in their recent inspection.  Most of the children who attend the Unit apply to be admitted to our school.  This year they provided us with the majority of our present Reception class.  Fewer children have come from Shanklin, Lake and Sandown in recent years.

We have five classes, Reception through to Year 4.  There are five full time teachers who are ably supported by a team of Teaching Assistants.

St Wilfrid’s is a school where there is happiness, trust, praise and encouragement.  It is a place, where everyone who is part of the community, is respected and valued.

The school has a very experienced and dedicated staff who work as a team to strive for high educational standards.  We are particularly proud of our achievements in PE and music with the school entering teams in many city games leagues and musical events.  The emphasis is always on fun and we aim to make these initiatives accessible to all.

St Patrick’s has a very committed Governing Body and School Association who work tirelessly for the benefit of the whole school community.

Holy Family – Millbrook, Southampton

Holy Family is a two form entry school with 438 pupils on roll, aged between 4 and 11.  The ‘catchment’ area is extensive, providing a wide socio-economic mix of family backgrounds.

There are two teachers in each year group, along with support staff who work with groups or individual pupils, supporting those with specific, identified needs.  There is a strong team emphasis amongst the staff of the school, which has resulted in a spirit of openness and honesty. Parents are valued as the prime educators of their children, and so are given the support they require in order to enable each child to grow in the love of Christ.

French is taught throughout the school, in small groups.  A residential visit to France each year supports the work done in Year 6.

Holy Family is the ‘lead’ school for the SCITT, with the training base being located in its grounds.  A new classroom was also added to our rapidly expanding school in July 2000.  Two new computer suites have now been installed, one for each Key Stage.

Springhill - Southampton

Springhill is a large, three form entry, inner city, voluntary aided Catholic primary school of some 580 pupils currently on roll. It has a wide catchment area that reflects the socio-economic and multi-ethnic population of the whole of Southampton. The school is served by 15 governors, 6 of whom are Foundation Governors from the three central parishes of Southampton.

The school site is large and surprisingly green for an inner city school. The buildings that house the lower school date back to 1920. Those that accommodate children from Year 4 upwards were built in the early 1960's and the two distinct areas are now linked by a buildng completed in August 2000. There are four playground areas and a school playing field. Further improvements are in hand, ready for completion in July 2003.

The school has a proud tradition of serving local families, some of which have a third generation of children currently going through the school. The strong Catholic and inclusive ethos is appreciated by the multi-ethnic comunity of the local area in which the school plays an important supportive role.

St Swithun Wells Catholic Primary - Chandlers Ford

St Swithun Wells School has served the parishes of Chandlers Ford and Eastleigh for 31 years and occupies a spacious, level site on the top of Fryern Hill. Pupils come from Romsey to Fair Oak and beyond. There are currently 154 pupils in six classes with separate rooms for library, music and a computer suite. An After School Club, which runs each day, opened Spring 2002 and there is a weekly parent-toddler group.

The majority of pupils transfer after Year 6 to St Anne's and St George's secondary schools with whom there are good links; reflecting the wide catchment we also feed into almost all the local secondary schools.

There is a strong sense of community with an experienced caring staff, actively involved governors and a committed PTA; links with the parishes have developed greatly and we enjoy excellent support from our parish priest and priests in neighbouring parishes.

The last Ofsted report praised the school for being a 'stimulating and loving community in which pupils learn, achieve their potential and develop as caring and perceptive young people'. The school's Mission Statement is 'A Catholic community that learns and prays, cares and achieves'.

St Thomas More’s Catholic Primary – Bedhampton

St Thomas More’s is a Catholic Primary School serving the three parishes of Havant and Emsworth, Leigh Park and Hayling Island.

There are approximately 240 children on role aged 4 - 11.  The children are in 9 classes, some of which are mixed-age groups.  The groupings are according to chronological age.

The school is located in Bedhampton and works closely with the Oaklands and St Edmund’s clusters of Catholic schools.  In addition the school has strong links with the local schools and business partners in the local community as part of the Leigh Park Education Action Zone.  This has provided the school with additional resources and staffing and is leading to exciting challenges and opportunities, particularly in staff development in order to improve standards in all of the schools across the park.

St Anthony’s – Titchfield Common, Fareham

St Anthony’s school opened in 1991 and will celebrate its tenth anniversary in September.  The school mainly serves the parish of St Margaret Mary in Park Gate and is set in spacious grounds.  It is a one form entry school with a total of seven single year group classes.

During the past year the school has had an Ofsted Inspection and an Inspection of the Religious Education carried out on behalf of the diocese.

The Ofsted Inspection last July praised the very high standards reached by the children, particularly in English and mathematics, the quality of teaching, the procedures for ensuring pupils’ welfare, the partnership with parents and the excellent attitudes that the pupils have to their work.

The Diocesan Inspection of Religious Education carried out in October was equally complimentary about the school.  This report highlighted the genuine atmosphere of care and of good relationships, the good behaviour of the children, the high quality displays and the well planned and effective RE curriculum, which is made evident in a number of ways but particularly in the deeply reflective awareness in worship.

The school was extremely pleased with both reports and felt that they were a reflection of the hard work and dedication of the whole community.

St Mary’s – Gosport

St. Mary’s is the only Catholic school in Gosport and as such, serves the whole peninsula.  A big percentage of the children have parents with connections to the Navy and this produces its own set of challenges, e.g. dads away from home for long periods, families moving in and out of the area regularly, etc.  The school caters for children from the age of 4 to 11 years and currently has about 240 on role.  There are nine classes (four in KS1 – five in KS2) and with a one and a half form entry, it offers opportunities for experience in teaching mixed aged groups.

The children are well behaved and although many of the staff have been in post for several years, they all remain committed to move the school forwards.

St Swithun’s – Southsea

St Swithun’s is a 5-11 primary school (270 on roll) that supports three parishes in the south and east of Portsmouth.

It is developing a profile of mixed year classes which will eventually take our numbers up to 315 NOR.  A modest building programme is currently underway to support this.

Our OFSTED inspection of October 2000 commended the school for its very good ethos, teaching and learning commitment to high standards of work and behaviour.

We have cheerful, welcoming students and staff and a strong working relationship with parents and Governors.

We are well resourced on a tight site which is constantly developing.

We will welcome trainees and aim to offer them a stimulating placement in a supportive environment.

St John’s Cathedral School -  Portsmouth

St John’s is a single form entry Primary School, with its own 40 place Nursery.  Its mission is to educate the whole child through the Gospel values of Christ. The School is undergoing a period of refurbishment that has seen the establishment of an ICT suite, new toilets and art room as well as a modernised library and music room.

The curriculum is offered through a topic based approach. Key Stage 2 pupils are offered many sporting and musical opportunities during and after the school day.

The school enjoys close links with St.Edmund’s, its Catholic Secondary School neighbour and the Cathedral parish.

The staff at St John’s are keen for all children to be happy, confident, and well motivated so their education is positive and their future meets with success.

St Peter’s – Waterlooville

St Peter’s transferred site in 1999 to purpose built accommodation for 420 pupils, with 2 parallel classes for each year group.  The school is designed in “phases” comprising four classrooms sharing a practical area and computer bay.  Key Stage 1 is accommodated in the blue phase, Years 3 and 4 in the red phase and Years 5 and 6 in the green phase.  All the classrooms are arranged around an attractive internal courtyard.  There is a well-equipped library, a large hall and an attractive staff room.  The school is set in attractive wooded grounds, which includes a large sports field.

The curriculum is co-ordinated in each phase by a Phase Manager who is the line-manager for all staff in the phase.  The Phase Managers, Deputy Head and Head comprise the School Improvement Team.  Each core subject has a Subject Manager who is supported by other colleagues who form that subject’s management team.

We place a high priority on teamwork in planning, developing and evaluating the curriculum together.  Each year group plans an identical curriculum for both classes and we use setting in maths in the upper school.  A team of Learning Support Assistants work alongside children in the classroom and also run programmes such as ALS and SYDNEY to help children acquire basic skills.  The SENCO and ABCO offer support to staff in planning individual and group programmes to ensure that children’s individual learning needs are met.

Our pupils come mostly from the parishes of the Sacred Heart, Waterlooville and St Edmund’s, Horndean.  The majority are articulate and relatively privileged children who have the potential to achieve high above national expectations.  Almost all of them will transfer to Oaklands School, which shares our campus, for their secondary education.  We have close links with Oaklands and the other Catholic primary schools in our cluster.

These children must have a letter of support from their minister of religion. This criteria also applies to Catholic applicants.

The school has high expectations of pupils in work and behaviour and achievements are high as reflected in our annual SATs results. The school’s OFSTED inspection was positive, in which it was described as “A school with many strengths”.
