Teaching Apprenticeships

Teaching Apprenticeships

PCP SCITT are on the Register of Apprenticeship Training Providers and can provide training for Postgraduate Teaching Apprentices.

We work with partner schools located in Portsmouth, Southampton, Bournemouth, Basingstoke, Aldershot and Farnborough as well as other areas of Hampshire, Wiltshire and Dorset.

Post-Graduate Teaching Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships are a salaried route for existing school employees, or applicants with a school prepared to employ them for the duration of their apprenticeship.

  • A salaried training route lasting for a minimum of 13 months (usually around 4 school terms)
  • Apprentices are released for 20% of their working hours (the equivalent of one day a week) for off the job training.
  • Apprentices are employed by their school as unqualified teachers (salary costs met by the school)
  • Training costs are paid through the Apprenticeship Levy Fund
  • Central training is provided by PCP SCITT, who is approved for the Register of Apprenticeship Training Providers.
  • The programme leads to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and the award of an Apprenticeship.
  • Apprentices are summatively assessed against the Teachers’ Standards (2012). They will also complete 2 written assignments and undertake an End Point Assessment in Term 4 of training.

We strongly encourage interested candidates and/or their supporting school to contact PCP SCITT prior to submitting an apprenticeship application to discuss apprenticeship levy funding eligibility and requirements.

PCP SCITT and the DfE Post-Graduate Teaching Apprenticeship

Launched in September 2018, the Post-Graduate Teaching Apprenticeship is an exciting new route into teaching. The PCP is delighted to be at the forefront of this new, employer-led training route and has been involved in the initial pilot during 2018-19. We have been working closely with local authorities and schools, shaping and developing the new training.

So far, this route has been gaining in popularity and PCP SCITT are Hampshire County Council’s chosen provider for teaching apprenticeships. We also work with schools across Portsmouth, Dorset and Bracknell and the academic year 22/23 saw 100% of our apprentices complete with a grade of outstanding.

Requirements for Becoming a Post-Graduate Teaching Apprentice

Post-Graduate Teaching Apprentices will be required to meet the same statutory requirements for entry as other ITT programmes.

Those applying must have:

  • An undergraduate degree awarded by a UK higher education provider or a recognised equivalent qualification
  • A GCSE in English, Science and Mathematics at Grade 4 (or C) or above or equivalent. To find out more about equivalency testing click here
  • Applicants who require equivalency tests in Math and English also need functional skills qualifications or
equivalent qualifications at level 2 in mathematics and English to meet the apprenticeship criteria.

Salaries for the Post-Graduate Teaching Apprentice

Post-Graduate Teaching Apprentices must be employed as unqualified teacher for the full duration of their apprenticeship (usually around 4 terms). Teaching apprentices are paid on the unqualified teacher scale (academies, non-maintained schools and free schools will follow their own pay arrangements) and the salary costs are met by the employer. Once QTS has been awarded, apprentices will be paid as ECTs and will have the same employment rights as ECTs. Those employed by free schools and academies will be paid in accordance with the salary flexibilities allowed by those schools.

Funding for the Post-Graduate Teaching Apprenticeship

The introduction of the Post-Graduate Teaching Apprenticeship has meant that schools have an opportunity to access apprenticeship funding to train their staff. The fund is from the apprenticeship levy and can be accessed by all levy-paying schools. If a school does not pay the levy, it is still possible to access funding through the levy, although a 10% co-contribution is required from the school.

School-based training is supervised by a school mentor, usually the class teacher, who guides trainees as they put into practice the techniques and knowledge learned during central training session. Initially trainees work alongside their mentor. As trainees develop their skills, they are supported to take on greater independence and responsibility for whole class teaching including planning, teaching and assessing. Mentors meet with trainees on a weekly basis to provide feedback, offer support, and set achievable development goals.

Trainees are also allocated a SCITT link tutor, who quality assures the school-based training and provides additional support and advice. PCP mentors and link tutors are chosen for their professional expertise and undertake yearly professional development to ensure PCP trainees receive high quality training.

Centre-based Training:

Weekly SCITT central training session are help in Southampton. Workshops and seminars are led by experienced education professionals and senior leaders. Subject sessions cover the core curriculum areas of English, Maths and Science and introduce the full range of non-core subjects including ICT, Art, Geography and Religious Education. Professional Studies sessions draw on up-to-date research to progressively build on trainees’ understanding of the theory and practice of teaching and learning. Particular importance is placed on subject knowledge for teaching and high-quality teaching practices that support strong pupil progress.

Assessment:

Assessment opportunities support trainees in meeting the summative assessment of mastery of the Teachers’ Standards (2011) and the requirements for PGCE Master’s credits through Bath Spa University. Over the year, trainees undertake three written assignments to deepen their understanding of core professional theory and practice. Assessed teaching observations and ongoing feedback supports trainees in knowing exactly how they are progressing and their next steps to reach even higher standards of professional practice.

  • With the course being so school-centred, it meant that we quickly got to put the theory into practice. Now I've completed my first term as a teacher, I wanted to say thanks for all the help and support last year. I felt as prepared as I could have been starting my first job!
  • I really feel the PCP course has prepared me well to become a teacher. I've already recommended it to two people and will continue to do so.
  • I am so pleased that I applied and was accepted onto this course. It has provided me with an excellent start to teaching and the supportive and caring approach of course leaders and trainees has really helped me to develop.
  • The people at the training centre have been so helpful and you get a real sense that everybody wants you to do your best.
